Booking and Availability
-
How do I book a session?
Email Jocko - he'll walk you through the best options for your project.
-
Do you offer hourly or daily rates?
If you are engineering yourself, we only offer full days. If you are hiring Jocko or Casey, you can book half or full days.
-
Do you offer discounts for longer blocks of dates?
It depends on how busy our schedule is. Email Jocko and ask him.
-
How far in advance should I book my session?
If you are engineering yourself, you can usually find time on the calendar within 2 weeks. If you are hiring Casey, book 1 month in advance. If you are hiring Jocko, book 2 months in advance.
-
What does the rental include?
We have an extensive gear list and you are invited to use all of it. You are also welcome to bring any of your own gear. There is a 5-bed guest apartment where you can stay.
-
Is there an additional charge to use certain gear?
Nope. The whole idea is to give you the best possible value.
-
Can I book the studio to shoot video / record my podcast / rehearse?
We are set up to handle a wide range of uses. Email Jocko and discuss.
Policies
-
Do I need to put down a deposit? What's your cancellation policy?
The studio rental fee must be paid in advance to confirm and secure dates on our calendar. The pre-payment functions as a deposit. If you cancel less than a week before the session, we keep the deposit.
-
Is there a security deposit or cleaning fee?
First time renters need to pay an extra $150 as a security deposit. That will be refunded once the studio is inspected and given the thumbs up.
-
What are the house rules?
No smoking or vaping indoors - We have a balcony for you to use. Clean up after yourself and leave the studio looking how you found it. Wet shoes come off at the door. Be careful of our gear, this whole project is a labor of love.
-
Who is responsible for damage?
The client agrees to pay for all non-wear damage. Drum heads, cymbals, guitar strings are all covered by the studio. Damage to the instruments, mics, facility will be assessed based on a pro-rate of what it would cost to restore to excellent condition.
-
Are there limits on volume or hours?
Not really. The soundproofing is great here. Using any of our instruments including loud guitar amps and drums is fine 24-7. If you are doing something unusually loud (marshall full stack dimed in the live room, very loud bass cabs, etc) please be on the respectful side especially after 11pm.
-
Can I bring friends and family?
Each musician who is playing in the session may bring 1 guest. You need to share the house rules with the guests, and they need to clean after themselves and keep the place tidy. You are responsible for them.
-
Can I bring my pet dog Fido?
We love em but, no, there are too many breakables.
Getting Here
-
Where do I park? Do you have enough parking for X type of vehicle(s)?
Park in the alleyway next to the building, or on Burnet Ave. Please do not park in any of the nearby lots, you might be towed. There is room in the alley for about 8 cars. Here is a link to our parking map.
-
How do I get into the building?
If Jocko or Casey is engineering your session, give them a call when you arrive. If you are self engineering, you'll be provided instructions when you book the session.
-
I am coming from out of town. What's the best way to get to the studio?
I-90 (NYS Thruway) from points East and West, or I-81 from points North and South. The studio is right on the north edge of Downtown Syracuse.
Space and Gear
-
What gear do you have?
Check out our comprehensive list of gear here.
-
Do I need to bring any of my own equipment?
Usually not. We have an amazing array of gear, cables, adapters, and doo hickeys. Drummers should bring sticks and a favorite kick pedal.
-
How big is the studio? How many people fit?
The studio is set up for drums, bass, keyboards, 2 guitarists, and 2 singers to perform at the same time. (7 people). The control room has 2 rolling chairs and a 5 person couch. If you have a 7 piece band and a producer and engineer, it will be a little cozy but still comfortable. Click here for a link to the floorplan.
-
What are the acoustics like?
The live room leans more absorptive but not dead on the drum kit end, and leans more reflective on the other end. The vocal booth and iso booths are very dead.
-
Does the studio have a "sound"?
The oak floors, balance of pro diffusion and bass traps, mic locker that leans heavily towards ribbons and thicker sounding condensers, and transformer loaded preamps give the studio a warm, punchy, but hifi sound. Artists are encouraged to make the space their own, however!
-
I am going to shoot photo/video. How's your lighting? Do you have any eequipment?
We use a full color Philips Hue system. It’s very high quality light. You can set a different scene for every room. We also have some quality webcams that you can record feeds from.
-
Are you set up for Zoom or other video chat software?
Yes, we have Zoom set up and ready to roll.
-
Do you have a way for me to patch in/out of the control room gear?
Yes - almost all of the gear is accessible via TRS patch bays.
Self Engineering
-
Will there be someone available for tech support if I have a problem?
Yes - we’ll make a plan for that once you book time.
-
I'm new to recording. Will I be able to engineer my own session?
It depends on what you want to accomplish. For beginners, we'd probably advise having Jocko or Casey help you for an hour, half day, or day. Contact Jocko and he will help you decide.
-
I'm an experienced recording engineer. Will I be able to use the studio however I want?
Go nuts!
-
Can I bring a friend to help engineer?
Sure!
-
What kind of computer can I bring?
Any PC, any Mac from the last 3 years or so. Even if your computer isn’t very fast it will still probably work fine to record. (Using a lot of plugins is another story)
-
Will I need to patch a lot of things in order to run the session?
No, we have everything patched and ready to roll.
-
What DAWs do you use?
Our primary DAWs are REAPER and ProTools. We also have Cubase and Samplitude. All software is set up with our audio drivers and input templates and ready to roll.
